Destination: Quintana Roo, Mexico
Time of Year: Spring (March, April, May)
Average Temperatures: 72° F to 86° F
Typical Weather: Warm, hot, driest season
There's a reason Mexico is such a popular destination for spring breakers—both college-aged and older age groups. It's hot, the skies are clear, and travel deals are tempting. The Quintana Roo region, in particular—which includes places like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cozumel—makes appearances all over your Instagram feed at this time of the year.
Because spring is peak season in this region, your vacation packing list is relatively simple and straightforward. You'll need all the basics of a tropical vacation—bathing suits, a cover-up, sandals, dresses, light layers, and the all-important sun protection. When you're packing, remember one thing: You'll probably spend the majority of your time in the sun and by the water. If you have a swimsuit and some sandals, you'll be fine.
What to Wear in Quintana, Roo Mexico — Spring Packing List
This kind of Mexican getaway involves a lot of lounging by the beach, but if you're planning a more adventurous trip, get some inspiration from our national park packing list. For this trip, you should be able to fit everything in a carry-on; we suggest wearing your sneakers on the plane and any of your heavier layers.
Sunglasses and Sunhat
Stylish Sneakers
If you're flying into Cancun from a slightly chillier spring, you'll want to avoid trekking around the airport in sandals—but you also don't want to arrive to an 85-degree day in thick boots. Sneakers it is.
Light Pants
Many Quintana Roo resorts have dress codes, especially for evening meals. A loose pair of pants (like our favorite style from Summersalt) can be dressed up with heels (our picks below) and an elevated tank or thrown on over your one-piece for poolside lunch.
Bathing Suits
Self-explainable. We love a one-piece that can double as a top or an always-flattering high-waisted bikini.
Beach or Pool Cover-Up
Depending on where you're staying, you'll probably spend the majority of the time in a bathing suit, changing only for dinner. Bring a cover-up to keep in your beach bag for trips to and from the water and beach bar.
Dresses
Easy to throw on, can be dressed up or dressed down. Pick light fabrics (think linen or cotton) and styles that work with both sandals and wedges.
Shorts
Leave the jeans at home because let's be honest, will you really wear them on your trip to Mexico? Bring two to three pairs of shorts, with varying fabrics and fit.
Light sweater or sweatshirt
It may get chillier at night, but there's no need to bring more than one or two layers. Solid colors that go with the majority of your suitcase work best.
Casual Sandals
Obviously. Again, one to two pairs is plenty. A classic Birkenstock or a raffia-accented style will be all you need.
Block Heels or Espadrilles
Throw on a block heel or espadrille for ocean-view dinner; no tall heels necessary. We love the brand Soludos for comfortable spring and summer styles.
Beach Bag + Personal Item
We found several styles that double as both your personal item on the plane and your beach or pool bag. There's enough room for sunscreen, a book or two, magazines, and more.
